Moving Domains

Moving domains is a messy process. It requires changing urls and settings up messy changes. Here are three quick documents to make that process simpler before you go scouring the web,. Keep in mind these guides are specifically for WordPress users.

If you are using a webserver like Nginx, you can setup 301 Redirects from your old domain as follows, edit /etc/nginx/conf.d/youroldwebsite.conf

server {
listen 80;
root /thelocationofyouroldwebsite;
index index.php index.html index.htm;
return 301$request_uri;

Otherwise just add the following to your .htaccess file, somewhere in that file

RewriteEngine on
#Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^ [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$$1 [L,R=301,NC]

Finally login to Google Webmaster console, go to Search Console, click on your website, go to the top right “gear” -> Change of address and select the new website that you added in the search console. This will help to redirect all traffic from your old website to your new website.
